    5 cycling days,
    Toulouse to Sète

This is the canal for cyclists who want to cover every kilometre under their own steam. You cover the full 257 km from Toulouse to Sète, taking in the canal's highest point at Naurouze, the Cité of Carcassonne, the spectacular Nine Locks of Béziers and a glorious beach-path finish into Sète.

The complete Canal du Midi from Toulouse to the Mediterranean. You carry your gear in panniers (excess luggage stored by us and returned at journey's end). A proper cycling adventure.

    Day 1 · Arrival

    Arrival in Toulouse

    Arrive in Toulouse.

Visit the vibrant city centre — the Pink City.
    Overnight: Toulouse
    Day 2 · ~62 km

    Toulouse → Castelnaudary

Set off on the paved towpath along the Canal du Midi. Reach the canal's highest point at the Seuil de Naurouze — the continental divide, where rainwater flows either to the Mediterranean or the Atlantic. Finish in Castelnaudary, home of cassoulet.

After breakfast bikes are delivered and fitted at your hotel, roadbook explained.

The Rigole aqueduct at Naurouze is a fascinating piece of hydraulic engineering.
    Overnight: Castelnaudary
    Day 3 · ~42 km

    Castelnaudary → Carcassonne

Cycle through sunflower fields to Carcassonne. Pass Bram and its circular medieval village and archaeological museum.

Bram's museum is just a short detour from the towpath — worth it.
    Overnight: Carcassonne
    Day 4 · ~39 km

    Carcassonne → Homps

Leave Carcassonne on the canal towpath. Enjoy the peace and quiet, watching small boats drift past. The landscape opens up into vineyards and garrigue.

    Overnight: Homps
    Day 5 · ~64 km

    Homps → Béziers

A longer day following the Canal du Midi downstream. Pass the Malpas Tunnel — 173 metres long, dug in one week — and the ancient Oppidum d'Ensérune on the hill above. Finish at the Nine Locks of Fonseranes — one of the great engineering wonders of the 17th century.

Take time at the Nine Locks — the view of Béziers from here is magnificent.
    Overnight: Béziers
    Day 6 · ~50 km

    Béziers → Sète

Follow the paved towpath from Béziers to Portiragnes Plage. Continue along small roads to Agde and the optional harbour stop at Marseillan. Finish on the spectacular beach bike path from Marseillan Plage into Sète.

There are several good swimming spots on the final stretch — the beach path is hard to beat.
    Overnight: Sète
    Day 7 · Departure

    Sète — Departure

Explore Sète — the Venice of southern France. Depart by train, well connected throughout France and Spain.
