This is our most popular bike tour along the Canal Du Midi.  It starts at the beautiful Lac St Ferreol in the Black Mountains.  Lac St Ferreol is a man made lake constructed between 1667 and 1672 by Paul Riquet, the founder of the Canal Du Midi.  The dam here was the largest one in the world at the time of its completion.  It is also the oldest part of the Canal Du Midi.  Its function was, and still is, to store as much water as possible to supply the Canal Du Midi during the dry months.

The tour follows the Canal Du Midi downstream and goes in the direction of the prevailing winds!

Come cycle the Canal Du Midi with Relax Bike Tours, the only bike touring company actually located on the Canal Du Midi.  Using the highest quality products available along with the most detailed route maps, this will be a pleasure for both young and old alike.  We are a registered travel agency, as required by French law, giving you extra peace of mind.  We offer many bike tours along the Canal Du Midi.

Day 1. St Ferréol - Canal Du Midi self guided bike tour Source to Sea

Arrival at excellent 2** hotel with pool on the lake's shore.  This lake was the largest man-made lake at its time and supplies the Canal Du Midi with water year round.  This is also the highest point on your trip; all downhill from here to Séte.  Swim in the hotel pool or the lake.  The lake is a very peaceful location.  The hotel is managed by a lovely couple who are bilingual, speaking both French and English fluently.  Many of our past guests have expressed a desire to spend 2 nights here.  Visit the Canal Du Midi museum and park.

OPTION: Taxi service from Toulouse to Lac St Ferreol organized by us.

Day 2. St. Ferréol - Castelnaudary  ~50Km / 31 Miles - Canal Du Midi self guided bike tour Source to Sea

Bicycles will be delivered and fitted, roadbook explained, and general orientation.  If you brought your own pedals or seat they will be put on at this time as well (please let us know before hand so we can bring the proper tools).  Follow the Rigole de la Plaine towards Canal Du Midi.  All water flowing through Canal Du Midi goes through this creek, the lake being the source of all the water.  It was Paul Riquet's idea to use the water from the Black Mountains to finally allow the construction of the overland waterway from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.  The Rigole joins the Canal at le Seuil de Naurouze.  This is the so-called continental divide; rain falling to the East of this point will end up in the Mediterranean, and rain falling on the west will end up in the Atlantic.  Today's trip leads you to Castelnaudary, famous for its local dish "cassoulet."

Spend night in quiet 2** hotel on the canal's bank.

Day 3. Castelnaudary - Carcassonne  ~40Km / 24 Miles - Canal Du Midi self guided bike tour Source to Sea

Another great cycling day awaits you.  Cycling on the flat towpath of the Canal Du Midi, you will pass vineyards, locks, poppy fields, and sunflower fields.  You will have plenty of time to visit the medieval cité of Carcassonne.  The Cité is the largest medieval castle in the world, and its cobbled streets, drawbridges, and narrow streets are said to have inspired Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty.

Spend night in lovely 3*** hotel at the feet of the Cité.

Day 4. Carcassonne - Homps  ~45Km / 27 Miles - Route 1

or

Day 4. Carcassonne - La Redorte ~35Km / 22 Miles - Route 2

After a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast you will begin your trip cycling along the Canal Du Midi.  Enjoy the peace and tranquility passing by vineyards, locks, poppy fields, and sunflower fields.

Spend night in excellent hotel near the  Canal Du midi in Homps or La Redorte, both with a pool.

Day 5. Homps - Narbonne ~40Km / 24 Miles - Route 1

or

Day 5. La Redorte - Sallèles-d'Aude ~ 33Km / 21 Miles - Route 2

Follow the Canal Du Midi until you reach Le Somail, from where the route will start heading south and away from the Canal Du Midi if you are going to Narbonne.  After a few kilometers riding on small paved county roads with little to no traffic, you will reach the Canal de la Robine.  Following this canal you will end right in the center of Narbonne.

Spend night in elegant 3*** hotel in the center of Narbonne or a beautiful B&B with pool in Salleles-d'Aude.

Day 6. Narbonne - Béziers ~39Km / 23 Miles - Route 1

or

Day 6. Sallèles-d'Aude - Béziers ~44Km / 27 Miles - Route 2

The first locks you will encounter this day are in Béziers.  These are the famous Nine Locks of Fonseranes.  At this point the Canal Du Midi drops 21,5 meters.  At the bottom of the Nine Locks you will notice that the Canal Du Midi splits up into two segments.  The oldest and original segment is in a straight line with the Nine Locks, and heads straight towards the river Orb.  Boats had to actually join this dangerous river and float downstream to once again join the Canal Du Midi later.  Due to the fact that too many boats sank, a new segment of the Canal Du Midi was dug in the 1850's which leads to a beautiful aqueduct.  The view of the Béziers cathedral from this aqueduct is fantastic!

Spend night in 3*** hotel in the historic downtown area of Béziers.

Day 7. Béziers - Sète  ~55Km / 34 Miles - Canal Du Midi self guided bike tour Source to Sea

After breakfast you head down through the Parc des Poets towards the Canal.  If you pay attention, you might be able to see the Mediterranean sea glimmer in the distance from downtown Béziers.  Flamingos and horses might make their appearance today, between Portiragnes and Marseillan Plage, usually towards the south of the bike path.  Agde is France's second oldest city, Marseille being the first.  It dates from the Greek times.  The path from Marseillan to Sète follows the beach and is paved and flat, thus taking about 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete.

Bicycle pickup in afternoon at hotel.

Spend night in the best and most beautiful 3*** hotel next to the Grand Canal in Séte.
